Shopping. Souvenirs and Pinocchio

November 1st, 2012

Survival for old good fictional heroes is more than difficult in this era of new idols like Shrek, Alex and Marty, and Megamind. Italian adoration for their wooden toy Pinocchio is, thus, rather surprising. And it doesn’t only exist among the smallest ones, adults keep telling jests about the growing nose as long as they are able to utter a word. Moreover, apparently serious philosophers and authors indulge the idea of some hidden link between Pinocchio and … you’d never guess.. Jesus Christ. Namely, Gian Luca Pierotti got so much carried away with the “Handbook of Legendary Art” written by an American Clara Clement and stating that the first apparition of Jesus on Earth was in the form of a “living rod”, that he ventured an idea of close connection between the Biblical story and that of Collodi. Both of them, according to Pierotti, have scenes of crucifixion and other interconnected scenes.

But let us return to more mundane things, like travelling, relatives and souvenirs (the one who doesn’t see a connection here should be known either for being a home sick couch potato or a penny-pinching type). Looking for souvenirs to bring from Milan you can drop into a tiny shop not far from the Duomo cathedral. Actually, even if you already don’t know where to put your clothes because of all those souvenirs occupying precious space in your suitcases, visiting the shop can be a curious thing. The objects sold are mostly dedicated to Pinocchio, but there are also some other pretty articles made of pure wood for babies and children. Pay attention to funny clocks and wall height meters to measure the growth of your offspring. Small souvenirs in the form of pens and magnets are also to be considered.
